Visual consultant and instructor at the International Center of Photography in New York City and the Santa Fe Workshops in New Mexico.
For its annual summer show, the Atlanta Photography group has chosen a very provocative and exciting thesis: "HOT: Images that Sizzle." And from what I have seen from the entries for this show, Atlanta is a city that certainly may lay claim to this word.
"HOT" evokes vastly different image interpretations both from the viewer and the photographer. It can be a beautiful and alluring woman, an abstract form of paint, or steel heated to its melting point. Its image can take the form of a body expressing itself through dance, or through the more common but equally as elegant exhilaration of everyday athletics. It can also serve as a bitter metaphor like the scorched and sad memories that are left behind in Paul Conlan's "Fan Left in the Ashes."
From Jamie Butler Cicatiello's body landscapes to Jeffrey Mitchell's delicate fire of summer poppies in bloom, the variety of photography created and submitted for adjudication was compelling.
Additionally, I was struck by the humor that revealed itself as a central theme that seems to run through many of my selections. I especially like Susan Barmon's "The Devils and Jesus" and the uninhibited, sunbathing couple composed by Charles Maniaci in his image, "Deep Tan."
I was also struck by E. Wright Ledbetter's powerful images and chose "In the Hot Spring" for the invitation because of the seemingly contradictory feelings of both oppression and relief that I found within the photograph.
In total, the visual creativity of the photographers I judged for APG's Summer Show was impressive and encouraging. Curating the show has been a great pleasure and I believe Atlanta (dare I say, "Hotlanta") has a rich future with its photographic talent. I would like to thank all of the photographers who participated in this exhibition for sharing your work with me and the Atlanta Photography Group for this opportunity. - Laurie Kratochvil
