Passing Through Afghanistan

For centuries Afghanistan has played host to an ever-changing whirlwind of warlords, dynasties, invaders, and occupiers. Through it all the Afghan people have adapted themselves to the political whims of the day as ruling regimes have passed and retreated, often as quickly as they arrived and without ever having come to terms with understanding this complex society. This series of images was shot with slow shutter speeds, panning a camera through a car window as the visiting photographer passed the anonymous subjects by.

Thorne Anderson has been covering international news with Corbis/ Sygma since 1999. His photographs are regularly published in magazines and newspapers including Time, Newsweek, Stern, RollingStone, People, Playboy, New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Times (London), The Guardian, and others. Anderson has a master's degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism and formerly taught Journalism and Mass Communication at the American University in Bulgaria. His work was last exhibited at the APG gallery as part of "Unembedded", a touring exhibition of photography from Iraq.

Wednesday July 16, 7:30PM: Thorne Anderson will speak on the topic, Glass Houses: when and why does documentary photography end and art begin, tracing the evolution of a personal project from private moments to public display?
