BIOGRAPHY
Jean Caslin
Jean Caslin was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Connecticut and Kentucky. She holds a BA in English language and literature and art history from Boston University and an MA in art history from Stanford University. During 21 years in nonprofit arts management, she has served as administrator, curator, educator, editor and writer. From 1979 to 1988, she was assistant director of the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University. She has served as executive director and curator of Houston Center for Photography since April 1988. As curator, she has created or supervised 190 on-site exhibitions.
She has taught courses in the history of photography over the past 19 years at four colleges in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Texas. She has written for numerous art publications and has guest curated exhibitions for: Women and Their Work, Austin, TX, Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; and Photoamericas, Tulsa, OK. With a special interest in strategic planning, Jean has served or serves on the board or in an advisory capacity for five nonprofit organizations including: Society for Photographic Education; Texas Photographic Society; Houston FotoFest International, Community Artists Collective and Society of Contemporary Photography, Kansas City, MO.
Jean has served on peer panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Museum and Library Services, Arizona Commission on the Arts, Division on the Arts, Louisiana, New Hampshire Commission on the Arts, Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County, Ohio Arts Council, Rhode Island Council on the Arts, and the McKnight Foundation, Minneapolis. She was the juror for Fellowship 2001 of the Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburgh, PA, and serves as a regular peer reviewer for photography manuscripts submitted to the University of Texas Press, Austin.
An exhibiting visual artist, Jean presented mixed-media installations at Don Foster Studios, Houston during FotoFest 2000 (March 2000) and at Studio 424, Galveston (October 2000). Her photographic work was also included in Rice University Continuing Educations Student Exhibition (2001) and in the juried competitions: 16th Annual Members Only Exhibition of Texas Photographic Society (2001) and The Glassell School Student Exhibition (2001).
