Speaking of Photography: Andrew Thomas Lee

I was supposed to be a musician. When I was 25, I went on tour in Europe with a band and bought a DSLR, because a point-and-shoot didn’t seem worthy of my first trip overseas. That’s where my interest in photography started. I had so much fun documenting our trip through photos. When I got home, I started assisting with a photographer friend while working full-time at a coffee roastery. Eventually, I quit my day job to start my own business as a wedding and portrait photographer.

Everything fell into place when I photographed my first restaurant. I love shooting food, working with chefs, and being part of the Atlanta restaurant scene. I’m a member of the Southern Foodways Alliance, and I focus a lot of my work on food culture and how it plays a role in everyone’s life. Beautiful plates are always nice, but learning what it took to get there is what really captivates me. In addition to food, I shoot portraits, musicians, spaces, and other creative work.

I’ve been lucky enough to work for lots of great restaurants, chefs, architects, and designers all over the country, as well as publications like Esquire, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, People magazine, Atlanta magazine, Garden & Gun, and The Wall Street Journal. I live in Atlanta with my wife, Kate, and our Great Dane, Leon.
