Reception & Meet the artist/artist talk: Sept 19, 6:30-8:30pm

Ascending is a series of images that exhibits the elevation of energy and passion in dance. Traveling through a variety of states including: New York, North Carolina, and countries such as Trinidad and Tobago and more, Ascending exemplifies how the background of an environment becomes a dancer’s uninterrupted stage. This series features some of most amazing dancers living from one moment to the next.

“movement captured in frame” – A phrase that best describes, performing and visual artist, Shoccara Marcus. Shoccara is self-described as, “Dancer first. Photographer second.”  Her relationship with dance started at an early age, beginning with after-school programs in gymnasiums and local dance schools, to her acceptance into the Dance program at Tri-Cities Visual & Performing Magnet High School. From plies and tendus to snapshots and photo albums, her love for dance would soon find her capturing its fluidity through a different lens. Upon graduation from high school, Ms. Marcus’ attended Howard University, where she received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance, with a minor in Visual Arts-Photography.

Ms. Marcus obtained her Master of Fine Art degree in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design (Atlanta, GA), and has worked extensively both nationally and internationally. She was recently awarded the Promenade’s Artist in Residence for 2019. Ms. Marcus completed a study-abroad program in Lacoste, France, as well as, curating her first gallery exhibit. Her work has been showcased at: China Jinan International Photography Biennial, Exposition des Etudiants in France, Museum of Contemporary Art (Atlanta, GA), Lucinda Bunnen Selects at Atlanta Photo Group (APG), Gallery 72, Savannah College of Art & Design, and in inspired Georgia; a book featuring some of Georgia’s best poets and photographers. Ms. Marcus is excited about her next adventure as an artist in resident at the Promenade. Ms. Marcus’ fine art photography focuses on the investigation of “lived” experiences and her relation to the world around her.
